What Happens To Your Photo Students When They Leave?

Photo District News (PDN) recently published a very interesting feature entitled, “How Photographers Are Launching Their Careers.” It includes the results of survey of 200 “emerging photographers”. While, there appear to be some fundamental flaws in the survey and its procedures, I think that there is some very interesting and valuable information contained within the results. I strongly encourage you to check it out. Some of the interesting information includes:
Areas where students felt that their education fell short:
- 66% said that they could have used more training in photo business management.
- 44% said that they would have benefited from more post production training.
- 33% said that they felt that they would have liked more technique trainings.
How much did they need to borrow to get through school?
- 22% didn’t borrow at all.
- 25% borrowed $15,000 or less.
- 11% borrowed between $30,000 and $45,000.
- 10% borrowed more than $100,000.
Primary Means of Support?
- 52% responded from Freelance Assignement work.
- 14% “Other Photo Related Jobs”
- 9% Assisting
- 4% Print Sales
PDN has long been a supporter of photographic education. I applaud the author, David Walker and PDN for seeking out this information, as it is very valuable information to photo educators and industry personel alike. I would love to work with them and the wide variety of schools that I reach, to conduct a more comprehensive survey. If any of you have the interest or opportunity to survey recent grads please let me know.
