The workshop has two parts. The first part is on Filmmaking and the second on editing. There are lots of good take away materials available, including their Field Guide to Filmmaking, stillmotion’s very clever App SMAPP, and a DVD of the workshop so that you may review the content after the workshop is over. Get Details!

The tour will cover 36 cities between September 8th and November 20, 2012, Of course the usual stops in places like NY, LA, etc. However they are also including many cities that are often left off of such tours,  including places like Milwaukee, Salt Lake City, San Jose, Nashville, Tampa, and more. We hope to see you there!

Learning the Business of Photography

Screen shot 2010 12 08 at 8.37.40 PM 281x300 Learning the Business of PhotographyThis past spring MAC-On-Campus sponsored a series of seminars aimed at students and emerging professional photographers as part of the 2011 American Society of Media Photographers’ Strictly Business Conference. The workshops covered topics related to breaking into the industry, marketing your images, establishing a business, and staying on top of the financial and legal aspects of being a working photographer. I was lucky enough to attend all three of the conferences and got to see nearly all of the presentations. There were a lot of really good ones!

Well, now you can sit in on them too! ASMP recorded each of the presentations and has been kind enough to share them with us.  Be sure to check them out. You’ll be glad you did.

While they were all very good, below are some of my favorites that I feel are particularly well suited for Photo students:

The Basics of Copyright, Licensing, and Pricing, with Susan Carr

Breaking into the Biz, with Judy Herrmann

Business Basics Primer, with Judy Herrmann and Richard Kelly

Multimedia and Digital Video Primer, with Jay Kinghorn

Beyond the Classroom: A Photo Student’s Guide to Turning Pro

lg share en Beyond the Classroom: A Photo Students Guide to Turning Pro

Screen shot 2011 01 04 at 5.35.56 PM Beyond the Classroom: A Photo Students Guide to Turning ProMAC-On-Campus and Photoshelter are proud to announce a new and exciting  free webinar series, Beyond the Classroom: A Photo Student’s Guide to Turning Pro

While there is a lot of educational material available to student photographers covering technique and software, there seems little devoted to the business side of photography. Let’s face it, you could be a fabulous photographer, but if you don’t know how to do things like market yourself, run a business, get work seen, or  deal with clients, finding success in this very competitive profession becomes even more difficult. To help make the jump to a working professional photographer and better understand the business of photography, MAC-On-Campus and Photoshelter are excited to announce the creation of a new webinar series designed to help today’s photo students build sustainable careers in this rapidly changing industry.

The topics planned for this series include:

Marketing Your Photography Online  – How to market yourself and your work to get found by clients – websites, blogging & social media.

Inspiration – Where to find story ideas and subjects to photograph; maintaining ethics in a changing industry; keeping a positive attitude among obstacles & rejection.

Personal Development  – How photographers learn to treat others, maintain a balanced life, and welcome imperfection. Plus, managing relationships with clients.

Rates, Pricing & Promotions  – Pricing your services & images; selling photography online; plus promoting your work through partnerships, PR, and alternative sales channels.

Professional Development  – How the great photographers choose a specialty, establish a brand, and evolve their careers.

The webinars will be hosted by the folks at MAC-On-Campus and PhotoShelter. The first webinars will be presented by PhotoShelter co-founder and vice president Grover Sanschagrin, and will be based upon his blog post, The Top 11 Things Photographers Wish They Learned in Photo School . In these webinars, Grover will share new business research, tactical guidance, and hundreds of examples and success tips from world class pro photographers. Photo students and educators will have the opportunity to tune in for live online presentations, ask questions and get answers in real time, and participate in discussions on the business of photography from anywhere on the globe. Following the live sessions, the webinars will be available as videos and slide presentations on the MAC-On-Campus.com and PhotoShelter.com websites.

The first one will cover marketing yourself and your work. It will cover things like websites, blogging & social media. It will be held live on Friday January 14th from 1-2pm EST.
